About the Festival:

On July 4, Rotarians will serve breakfast from 6 to 10:30 a.m., featuring blueberry or plain pancakes, sausage and breakfast sandwiches along with orange juice, coffee, tea and milk.

At 10:30 a.m., club members will begin re-setting the stage for the 45th Annual Seafood Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Diners can feast on a traditional seafood dinner of lobster, mussels, corn, potato chips and beverage. They can also order lobster rolls, crab rolls, hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, watermelon, ice cream, soda and water.

While Rotarians organize the pancake breakfast and seafood festival to support the club’s community and international service, they also strive to make the event environmentally responsible. The club will provide “spudware” – knives, forks and spoons made from vegetable starch that comes from corn or potatoes – in an effort to reduce the amount of solid waste generated by nearly 2,000 pancake breakfasts and hundreds of seafood dinners. This will be the seventh year that the club has provided polylactide (PLA) cutlery, made from a clear vegetable polymer that looks like plastic but is completely biodegradable. Diners will also use biodegradable plates, cups, bowls, napkins and coffee stirrers.

Long after the festival is over, proceeds will continue to benefit the local community throughout the year. The MDI Rotary Club raises between $15,000 and $20,000 annually at the festival, with proceeds going to charitable donations and service projects. Rotarians also coordinate participation by other local nonprofits around the athletic field. Those nonprofits raise close to $50,000.

Join us this year; it’s a lot of fun!
